about

This is an adaptation of the traditional ballad Hares on the Mountain, Roud 329. Fern learned the tune from the singing of Shirley Collins. Lyrics are mostly traditional, except for one verse about sheep, which Fern wrote.

lyrics

Oh Sally my dear, it’s you I’d be kissing
Oh Sally my dear, it’s you I’d be kissing
She smiled and replied you don’t know what you’re missing

If all the young maids were like blackbirds and thrushes
If young maids could sing like the blackbirds and thrushes
How many young men would go beating the bushes?

If all the young maids were ducks on the water
If all the young maids were ducks on the water
How many young men would undress and dive under?

If all the young maids were hares on the mountain
If all the young maids were hares on the mountain
How many young men would take guns and go hunting?

Oh Sally my dear, I wish I could wed you
Oh Sally my dear, I wish I could bed you
She smiled and replied then you’d say I’d misled

If all the young men were rushes a-growing
If all the young men were rushes a-growing
How many young maids would take scythes and go mowing?

If all the young men were sheep in the meadow
If all the young men were sheep in the meadow
How many young maids would be burning the tallow?

If all the young men were hares on the mountain
If all the young men were hares on the mountain
How many young maids would take guns and go hunting?
